The Great Wall Tank 500 is inside the Russian Top 30 in May.
The Russian new car market bounces back up 112.1% year-on-year in May to 51,466 sales, yet the year-to-date tally remains down for now at -26% to 228,550 units. May 2023 is still off -65.1% on May 2021. As it has been the case since economic sanctions have been imposed on the country, Russian and Chinese carmakers are now the only ones selling significant amounts. The Russians are up 232.9% to 59.5% share vs. 37.9% in May 2022, while the Chinese are up 725.6% to 37.5% share vs. 9.6% a year ago. Illustrating this trend, Lada is up 297.6% year-on-year to 46.4% share vs. 24.8% a year ago, Haval is up 749.3% to 14.7% vs. 3.7% and Geely is up 682.4% to 13.8% vs. 3.7%. GAZ (+107.6%) trails the market but Changan (+683.8%) and Great Wall (+1795.8%) beat it.
Model-wise, the Lada Granta (+639.9%) accounts for 1 in 3 cars sold in Russia this month, and the Top 5 is unchanged on April with the Lada Niva (+478.6%), Haval Jolion (+832.9%), Geely Coolray (+700.6%) and GAZ Gazelle (+147.4%) in tow. The Geely Tugella (+631.3%), Haval F7X (+472.9%), Haval F7 (+431.9%) and Geely Atlas Pro (+417.8%) also post surreal gains below. The Haval Dargo (#10), Geely Monjaro (#15), Great Wall Tank 300 (#17), Sollers Atlant (#19), Changan UNI-K (#21), Great Wall Tank 500 (#22), Changan UNI-V (#25), FAW Bestune B70 (#27) and FAW Bestune T55 (#28) are the recent launches making it into the Top 30.
