Marriott International will expand the City Express brand, acquired in 2022 and currently in Latin America, into the United States and Canada, the company announced Tuesday.
The company said the City Express by Marriott brand, which represents the company’s first foray into the “affordable midscale” tier, is “designed to be conversion-friendly,” and said Marriott could have its first signed agreements and openings in the U.S. and Canada “in the coming months.”
Marriott in 2022 paid Mexico-based midscale hospitality company Hoteles City Express $100 million to acquire the City Express brand, which at the time included more than 17,000 guest rooms in 152 hotels across 75 cities in Mexico, Costa Rica, Chile and Colombia. Those properties, which have been integrated into Marriott’s Bonvoy loyalty program and booking platforms, “increased Marriott’s footprint in the region by approximately 45 percent,” according to the company.
Marriott also plans to expand the brand to Nicaragua, Bolivia and Brazil, it said.
