Mazda CX-30 set to observe siblings with tech improve

Where the Mazda 3 goes, the related CX-30 usually follows. It’s perhaps no surprise then, the small crossover should follow the hatch and sedan range in getting an update.

CarExpert understands that, like the Mazda 3, the CX-30 will receive some kind of update this year.

What this will entail isn’t clear, though a Japanese report on the Mazda 3 gives us a hint.

A report from Creative Trend indicated the Mazda 3 won’t receive any major design changes inside or out – somewhat unusual for a mid-life update – but will get an infotainment upgrade.

It’ll reportedly trade its 8.8-inch screen for a larger 12.3-inch unit, and ditch its CD/DVD player and HDMI input. The update will reportedly arrive in Japan in the northern spring, or between now and the end of May.

The larger infotainment screen would see the 3 – and the CX-30 if it gets it – offer one of the largest infotainment screens in its segment, and a larger system than most new Mazdas.

The upcoming CX-60 offers a 12.3-inch screen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, but only in GT and Azami trim levels. The base Evolve gets a 10.25-inch unit, as can be found in Mazdas like the CX-5 and CX-8.

The CX-30 was launched in 2019, the same year as the latest 3, and has received new variants in sync with the hatch and sedan range.

In 2020, for example, it gained a flagship variant powered by Mazda’s Skyactiv-X engine, and then gained a 24V mild-hybrid powertrain the following year.

In North America, it also received a turbocharged all-wheel drive flagship in line with the Mazda 3. Sadly, both models are off-limits to Australia as they’re produced only in Mexico in left-hand drive.

The CX-30 has become one of Australia’s best-selling small SUVs, perhaps at the expense of the related 3 which is no longer a podium finisher in its segment.

Mazda sold 13,891 examples of the CX-30 in 2022, making it the second best-seller in the small SUV segment. Only the MG ZS range, which also includes the ZST and ZS EV, sold better with 22,466 sales overall.

The CX-30 also managed to topple long-running models like the Hyundai Kona (11,538) and Mitsubishi ASX (12,753).
