Almost two years after it was initially revealed, the flagship AMG GT 63 S E Performance plug-in hybrid can now be ordered locally with the first examples already arriving.
The 2023 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance is priced locally from $399,900 before on-road costs, which makes it the most expensive Mercedes-AMG model currently offered in Australia.
It’s worth noting the local AMG GT 4-door coupe range now only consists of this high-performance plug-in hybrid model, with the non-hybridised AMG GT 63 S no longer on sale.
The AMG GT 63 S E Performance blends a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine with an electric motor for total system outputs of 620kW of power and a staggering 1400Nm of torque. This also makes it the most powerful series production car Mercedes-AMG has ever produced.
Mercedes-AMG hasn’t really designed the AMG GT 63 S E Performance to be like a Prius, but it’ll still do 12km on electric power alone. It also has a claimed combined fuel economy figure of 7.7 litres per 100km.
The 150kW/320Nm e-motor is on the rear axle, where it’s combined with a two-speed transmission and an electronic limited-slip differential.
First gear takes the motor from standstill to around 140km/h, at which point it’s spinning at around 13,500rpm.
The 6.1kWh battery pack feeding it is mounted below the boot floor.
Although it’s mounted on the rear axle, the electric motor is mechanically linked to the car’s all-wheel drive system, so it can shuffle torque between the axles as required.
Along with the plug-in hybrid system, the petrol engine features a 48V mild-hybrid system.
Mercedes-AMG claims the AMG GT 63 S E Performance can do the 0-100km/h sprint in 2.9 seconds, and flat out you’ll be doing 316km/h.
The carmaker claims it uses a sophisticated liquid cooling system to keep the lithium-ion battery pack at 45 degrees celsius, no matter how hard you’re flogging the AMG GT 63 S E Performance on track.
Although you can almost deplete the battery pack, Mercedes-AMG claims the car always maintains enough charge to deliver its full punch.
The AMG GT 63 S E Performance has a maximum AC charging rate of 3.7kW. There are three levels of regenerative braking, with the most aggressive allowing for one-pedal driving.
Inside the AMG GT 63 S E Performance gets an AMG Performance steering wheel, an MBUX infotainment system with AMG hybrid-specific displays, head-up display, 14-speaker Burmester surround sound system, three-zone climate control, 64-colour ambient interior lighting, heated and cooled front seats with heated armrests, heated rear seats, as well as power-closing doors, among other features.
