Mercedes-AMG could be gearing up to release a high-performance electric sports sedan to tackle the Porsche Taycan head on.
These spy photos reportedly show an early mule of the electric Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe successor, codenamed C295 and potentially set to wear the GT4 EV nameplate, hidden under an EQE body.
It’s reportedly due in 2026, and could offer up to 746kW (1000hp) of power. That’s more than even the range-topping Taycan Turbo S, which pumps out 560kW.
There’s a hint this prototype isn’t a regular EQE, with larger wheel arches fitted to accommodate for a wider track.
It’s expected the upcoming performance model will be based on the AMG.EA platform which underpinned Mercedes-AMG’s Vision AMG concept from last year.
Not only will it reportedly use a different platform from Mercedes-AMG’s current electric sports sedans, the EQE 53 and EQS 53, the GT4 EV could wear dramatically different styling.
The production version could take inspiration from the aggressive Vision AMG concept, down to the distinctive six exhaust-shaped LED lights on the rear bumper.
Mercedes-AMG previously stated after 2025 all of its new platforms will be electric. It announced three platforms including MB.EA, for medium to large vehicles; AMG.EA for performance cars; and VAN.EA for, of course, vans.
In Australia, the brand’s fastest production electric car is currently the AMG EQS 53 4Matic+, with a dual-motor all-wheel drive powertrain producing 484kW of power and 950Nm of torque.
If that isn’t sufficient, the AMG Dynamic Plus option bumps these outputs to 560kW and 1020Nm in Race Start mode – effectively an EV launch control system.
Acceleration from 0-100km/h is possible in as little as 3.4 seconds in this mode, or 3.8 seconds in standard specification. Top speed is limited to 220 km/h, or 250km/h with the package.
