MG’s formidable gross sales purpose for MG 4 electrical automotive

MG Motor Australia has officially launched its fully electric MG 4 hatchback this week ,with a bank of more than 1000 pre-orders in the kitty.

Nevertheless, MG Australia boss Peter Ciao told journalists the brand has no issues with supply of its new model, and expects to deliver significant volume of the car before the end of 2023.

MG 4 is a revolutionary model for us and while we are starting off with more than 1000 orders, our goal is to achieve around 2000 per month for this model,” said Mr Ciao.

Popular Chinese electric car brand BYD delivered just over 1000 examples of its Atto 3 in July 2023.

MG hopes to double that volume with the 4 alone, while continuing to notch up significant sales of its other models across both its combustion engine and EV ranges.

In July 2023, MG sold 5347 vehicles across its ZS, HS, and MG 3 model ranges, enough to capture a significant 5.5 per cent share of the new car market in Australia.

To add some perspective to that number, MG sat above Volkswagen (3.1 per cent), Subaru (3.7 per cent), Mitsubishi (4.3 per cent), and Nissan (2.5 per cent).

If MG 4 does the kind of volumes the boss has set as a goal, expect the brand’s market share to creep up near the likes of Kia (6.3 per cent) and Hyundai (6.7 per cent).

MG 4 has launched in Australia with a range of four variants, including a choice of three battery sizes and two trim levels.

The model range kicks off with the MG 4 Excite 51 from $38,990 before on-roads, using a 51kWh battery and a 125kW motor for a WLTP range of up to 350km.

Stepping up a level is the MG 4 Excite 64, priced from $44,990 before on-roads, which uses a 64kWh battery and a motor with 150kW, for a range of up to 450km.

Next up is the MG 4 Essence 64, priced at $47,990 with the same 64kWh battery making the same 150kW but with a slightly lower 435km range due to extra equipment.

The current range-topper (until the high-performance dual-motor XPower version arrives later in the year), is the MG 4 Essence 77 from $55,990 before on-roads, which uses a 77kWh battery and a 180kW motor, and has a claimed range of 530km.

MG’s marketing boss, David Hearty, told CarExpert he expects the volume leader to the be the price-driven MG 4 Excite 51, thanks to its sub-$40k rice point, followed the MG 4 Essence 64 for those wanting more range.

The dual-motor MG 4 XPower is scheduled to arrive in December 2023, although pricing has yet to be released.
