Mini Australia has confirmed its upcoming Cooper and Countryman electric cars will each be offered with a pair of powertrains.
The move bucks a broader trend among rivals for the Cooper; currently the Cupra Born, Fiat 500e, and Peugeot e-2008 with which it’ll compete are offered with one battery and motor combination in Australia.
In the case of the Cooper hatchback, that means buyers will be able to choose between two front-wheel drive models.
The Cooper E has a motor on the front axle making 135kW of power and 290Nm of torque, good for a 7.3-second sprint to 100km/h.
Range from the 40.7kWh lithium-ion battery pack is 305km on the WLTP combined cycle.
The Cooper SE has 160kW and 330Nm from its front-mounted motor, which helps it sprint to 100km/h in 6.7 seconds. Range from the 54.2kWh battery pack is a claimed 402km on the WLTP combined cycle.
Both compare favourably to the recently discounted (and soon-to-be discontinued) Mini Electric Hatch, which has a 170kW and 270Nm motor on the front axle, and a claimed 233km range from its 32.6kWh battery pack.
The Mini Cooper E and SE will hit Australia in the third quarter of 2024.
The bigger Countryman E SUV packs a front-mounted electric motor making 150kW of power and 250Nm of torque, good for a 0-100km/h time of 8.6 seconds.
Moving to the Countryman SE brings all-wheel drive and outputs of 230kW and 494Nm. The 100km/h sprint takes a claimed 5.6 seconds.
It’s also on track to touch down locally in the third quarter of 2024. The petrol Countryman will arrive in the first quarter.
