Mitsubishi Xpander #1, Toyota Avanza now #1 YTD, gross sales sink -28.9% – Finest Promoting Automobiles Weblog

The Toyota Avanza topples the Honda Brio to claim the 2023 YTD crown.

New vehicle wholesales in Indonesia plunge -28.9% year-on-year in April to just 58,911 units, leading to a year-to-date tally now in negative at -1.6% to 341,311. Retail sales are off a slightly more palatable -16% to 68,534 and remain up 6.1% year-to-date to 339,962. The reason behind these dreadful drops is the much lower number of working days compared to April last year due to the Eid holidays. May sales are expected to rise sharply. Looking at the brands wholesales ranking, the Top 5 best-sellers are all in negative, with Toyota (-22.5%), Suzuki (-19.5%) and Mitsubishi (-18.5%) faring better than the market but still enduring double-digit negative results. Daihatsu (-31%) and Honda (-51.2%) are hit full frontal, meanwhile Hyundai (+3%) lodges the only YoY gain in the Top 10 and newcomer Chery advances two spots on last month to a record #12. As for the retail ranking, Toyota (-6.4%) and Daihatsu (-9.1%) hold relatively well, with Hyundai (+13.8%) again the only gainer near the top of the charts.

Model-wise (wholesales), the Mitsubishi Xpander (+5.8%) soars 5 spots on March to land in pole position for the first time since July 2021. It now ranks #5 year-to-date. Only 20 units below is he Toyota Avanza (-26.1%) which claims the YTD top spot off the Honda Brio (-86.2%) having a horrendous month at #25. The Toyota Kijang Innova (+9.3%) is not far behind, climbing 8 ranks on last month to #3. The Toyota Cayla (-3.1%) follows ahead of the Suzuki Carry Pikap (-21.1%) and Daihatsu Sigra (-27%). Two low-cost twins are having the month of their lives: the Toyota Agya is up 161.7% to #8 and the Daihatsu Ayla is up 37.9% to #10.

Previous month: Indonesia March 2023: Honda (+30%), Hyundai (+55.4%) again among best performers in market edging up

One year ago: Indonesia April 2022: Toyota Avanza reclaims top spot in market up 5%
