In 2022, GearJunkie called the Moots Routt RSL “the last gravel bike you’ll ever buy.” Well, that was before Moots released the Express. Maybe this gravel bike will be the last gravel bike you’ll ever buy.
Let’s take a look at why.
Moots did two new things for itself here. Usually identified with titanium, Moots ventured into new territory with a carbon frame. And, Moots made its first entry into an electric assist ride.
The Colorado-based bikemaker certainly isn’t the first name you think of when you think of e-bikes. But Moots’ first entry into the category is noteworthy. For one thing, it’s only 33 pounds. Not bad for an e-bike!
Moots claims it wanted to do two things with the Express. “First, to enable riders to seek and explore further,” the brand wrote in a press release. “And second, to showcase design characteristics that elevate the experience beyond other power-enabled bikes on the market today. Those being rider comfort, ride quality, ability to conquer mixed trail conditions, and the long-term durability that is synonymous with the Moots name.”
Shimano Components, Moots DNA
If you’re going to build an e-bike with adventure in mind, three things are key — range, range, and range. Moots claims the Express has 100+ miles of range powered by a Shimano 504wH battery and class 3 Shimano EP801 drive unit. And if changing gears isn’t your thing, never fear: The Express comes complete with two levels of auto-shifting technology, courtesy of Shimano.
In fact, the Moots Express is decked out with Shimano components from stem to stern, including a Shimano LinkGlide chain, cassette, and chainring. You guessed it; the Express is a 1×11 with a hill-ready 11/50T rear cassette.
The Shimano goodness extends right down to the ground, where Shimano GRX carbon wheels pair with 50c Panaracer GravelKing+ tires. Moots claims there’s clearance there for beefier choices if that’s your jam. Drop-bar off-road action, here you come.
