My Experience with Meindl MFS-Vakuum Hunters: The Perfect Boots for Elk Hunting

Living in Michigan is great, but I often find myself daydreaming about hunting elk in the western mountains every fall. Unfortunately, I only make it out there every couple of years in pursuit of the mighty Wapiti, my favorite animal to hunt. I cherish every moment spent in the mountains, chasing these magnificent creatures.

This fall, I kicked off my hunting season with a trip to southeastern Colorado, which quickly reminded me of how out of shape I am as a Midwest flatlander. No matter how much I prepare, my lungs never seem to catch up—perhaps it’s just a sign of getting older! Despite this, I secretly love that feeling and look forward to it each time I venture west.

Preparing for the Hunt

When planning these trips, I always pack my trusted gear while also experimenting with new equipment. This year, I decided to try a brand-new pair of Meindl MFS-Vakuum Hunters. I began breaking them in early, starting my “out west” routine in June. If you’ve ever worn a stiff, molded boot, you know the importance of allowing time for a proper break-in. To my surprise, these boots offered instant comfort right out of the box! Following the sizing guidelines, I sized down a half size based on consistent feedback, and they fit perfectly from the first wear.

Performance in the Field

Knowing we would traverse rocky mesas and boulder-strewn buttes, I needed boots that provided strong ankle support while remaining comfortable for long miles in pursuit of elk. The Meindl MFS-Vakuum Hunters feature a “boot-within-a-boot” design that stabilizes comfort and support. Inside the full-grain nubuck leather uppers, MFS Vakuum foam panels mold to your feet, ensuring a snug fit without uncomfortable pressure points—common pitfalls of lesser-quality boots. In simple terms, these boots offer excellent ankle support with a soft interior that created zero hotspots throughout the trip.

The first couple of days were filled with elk sightings from sunup to sundown as we waited for the right opportunity. On the third day, I was fortunate to spot a magnificent bull early in the afternoon, just as he rose from his bed to feed. We successfully stalked within a couple of hundred yards, and in the blink of an eye, I was standing over a beautiful 6×6 bull!

After a long afternoon of hauling the elk back to camp, I was pleasantly surprised to find my feet feeling great—thanks to the Meindl MFS-Vakuum Hunters. They performed exceptionally well, and I’ll definitely be adding them to the top of my packing list for future western adventures.

Technical Features

For those interested in the technical aspects, here are some standout features of the Meindl MFS-Vakuum Hunters:

  • Gore-Tex Waterproof Linings: Special stretch linings eliminate standard heel seams, reducing the risk of blisters.
  • Air-Active Insoles and Vibram Alpin Outsoles: Designed for grip and comfort.
  • Polyurethane Midsoles: Provide cushioning and compatibility with soft crampons for added versatility.

Meindl was a new brand for me, and I’m glad I took a chance on them this year in Colorado. Previously, I struggled to find boots that balanced comfort and support. Some were comfortable but lacked stability, while others offered support but caused hotspots. The Meindl MFS-Vakuum Hunters struck the perfect balance of comfort and performance. As I continue my elk-chasing adventures in the mountains, I’m excited to let these boots lead the way—hoping to get just close enough to fill the freezer every couple of years.
