Neighborhood Pond Provides 13-year-old with Personal Best Bass

It’s not every day that you find a new honey hole and catch a personal best bass. For 13-year-old Garrett Moore of Covington, LA, that’s exactly what happened on his latest adventure to a hidden pond near his neighborhood.

It all started when Garrett held a sleepover for some friends. Overnight, the teens made plans to fish a nearby pond that they located using Google Earth. They planned to ride their bikes to the nearest road access point and walk the rest of the way to what they were referring to as their new “honey hole”. The next day, their plan went accordingly, and the friends were fishing by 9:00 a.m.

Garrett and his friends fished until noon, with only two bass to show for it. Garrett’s father Leo was at work when he decided to call and check with Garrett on how his day went. “He said they only caught a couple of bass but they saw a lot of action,” Leo said. When Leo arrived home, he was curious about the location of the new pond. “When I returned home, I told Garrett that I wanted to see his new honey hole,” Leo said.

After Leo arrived home, the two headed down to the pond. As they were getting closer to the water, they heard a commotion in the water. It was a bass chasing shiners near the surface. Leo cast out and missed a bass that struck his Texas-rigged worm. As he was tying on a new lure, he heard Garrett yelling. “I was at the tailgate of my truck trying on a new bait when I heard him suddenly get loud and start yelling ‘PB! PB! PB! (personal best) We’re getting it mounted!” Leo says. He hooked the bass while fishing the bottom with a Texas-rigged worm.

The 4-pound bass was his son’s biggest bass catch to date. After a few minutes of hesitation, Garrett changed his mind and said, “You know what? Let’s put it back, and we can catch him again!” Leo said he was happy to see the excitement in his son, which reminded him of his own youthful enthusiasm for fishing. “He loves bass fishing,” Leo said. “I’m glad he was finally able to get a big fish that will hopefully keep bringing him back for more,” said Leo.
