Nissan Skyline going electric-only after virtually 70 years – report

Not even Nissan’s iconic Skyline can avoid the electric vehicle (EV) tide.

Best Car Web reports the Skyline will go all-electric for its next generation, but contrary to previous reports, it won’t be reborn exclusively as an SUV.

The next Skyline will reportedly be a 330kW electric fastback, which could debut in the northern autumn of 2025. An electric Skyline SUV is also reportedly still in the works.

The new electric Skyline range will replace the current model, which was previously sold here as the Infiniti Q50. The sedan first entered production in 2013.

The outlet reports the electric fastback will have four-wheel independently controlled all-wheel drive, suggesting it could feature an electric motor for each wheel.

The Japanese outlet’s render resembles that of the Infiniti Vision Qe concept revealed in October, with sleek, low and wide proportions, full-width “digital piano key” lighting and lighting that forms the outline of what looks like an enormous, double-segment grille.

The Vision Qe concept also features a striking accent line gently curving up along the doors to meet the rear fender, while a full-width lighting element forms an arc along the rear and sits above an illuminated Infiniti wordmark.

Infiniti still intends to build its production EV in the Canton, Mississippi plant that currently builds the moribund Nissan Titan pickup truck. It had previously confirmed the new EV would enter production in 2025.

It’s possible the rumoured Skyline successor and new Infiniti will be twinned, as with the current Q50/Skyline duo.

Best Car Web reports there will also be a Skyline-badged electric SUV, as had previously been reported. This would slot in above the Ariya.

The current Skyline is the last sedan remaining in Nissan’s Japanese line-up following the axing of the aged Fuga/Cima (aka Infiniti Q70) last year.

Nissan doesn’t sell any of its Chinese or American sedans, like the Altima/Teana, in its home market.

While Nissan doesn’t currently offer a Skyline SUV, it has in the past.

The first and thus far only generation of Skyline Crossover was simply a rebadged Japanese-market version of the Infiniti EX (later renamed QX50).

Introduced in 2009, it was based off the rear/all-wheel drive FM platform underpinning the Infiniti G/Nissan Skyline, Infiniti FX and Nissan 370Z, among others, but was shorter than the G sedan.

The following QX50 moved to a front/all-wheel drive platform, and the Skyline Crossover wasn’t replaced in the Japanese market.
