Peugeot will not observe VW, Mercedes-Benz in axing wagons

Peugeot is one of the few brands to still offer wagons in Australia even as new car buyers continue to flock toward high-riding crossovers and SUVs, and the brand has no plans to drop them.

Peugeot Australia currently offers both its small 308 and medium 508 passenger vehicles in a wagon body style, and the company has said it’s committed to keeping them both in its lineup for now.

“It’s interesting that the feedback from dealers is very much about having a wagon within the range,” said Peugeot Citroen Australia managing director Kate Gillis.

“So we will continue to stay in the range for the foreseeable future.

“It’s probably [the 308 Wagon] and the 508 Sportswagon are probably my favourites,” she said of the brand’s current lineup.

“I’m a wagon girl.

“[The wagons play] a great part, particularly [at] regional and some of our provincial dealers… where they need a little bit more of a workhorse as well as their passenger car.”

Peugeot has a long history with wagons and has offered both the current-generation 308 and 508 with the long-roofed body style since their respective launches. They’re both only available in a single highly specified trim level.

The French carmaker also just introduced the 508 GT Sportswagon Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV) locally to sit alongside the 508 Fastback PHEV. It’s priced from $82,915 before on-road costs.

These latest comments from Ms Gillis follow similar remarks from Audi national product manager Matthew Dale who said the German brand is still committed to wagons in Australia.

Audi Australia still offers quite a number of wagons, including a few high-performance models, as well as high-riding allroad variants.

Other car companies that still offer wagons in Australia include Skoda, Volvo, BMW, Subaru, Porsche, as well as Genesis.

One of the most recent car companies to axe its wagon offerings locally is Volkswagen, which it did in one fell swoop.

You can no longer order a new Golf Wagon or Golf R Wagon in Australia, nor the Passat and Arteon which both offered a long-roofed wagon body style.

If you want to purchase any of these Volkswagen wagon models, you’ll need to find one that’s in dealer stock.

Mercedes-Benz has also moved away from wagons in Australia. This is despite the company still offering a wide range of wagons globally, including the recently revealed E-Class All-Terrain.
