The mid-life updated Peugeot e-208 electric hatchback has been revealed globally, with it finally confirmed to come to Australia during 2024.
The Peugeot e-208 was first revealed in 2019 alongside the regular, second-generation combustion-powered 208 but it has been off limits until now.
Further details including Australian specification for the e-208 and specific launch timings will be announced “in due course”. For now Australian customers can register their interest on the Peugeot Australia website.
Globally the Peugeot e-208 is powered by a front-axle mounted electric motor producing 115kW of power, and uses a 51kWh battery pack.
Peugeot claims the e-208 has 400km of range on the combined WLTP cycle. When plugged into a 100kW DC fast-charger the battery is claimed to charge from 20 to 80 per cent in less than 25 minutes.
It’s worth noting there are range of new 48V mild-hybrid powertrains available on the regular 208, but these aren’t confirmed to be coming to Australia.
A highlight of this updated Peugeot e-208 is its refreshed looks inside and out.
The front end of the e-208 now has a similar design language as the updated 508 liftback and wagon, as well as the updated 2008. The frontal lighting signature comprises three long vertical “light claws”.
The rear of the e-208 has also been reworked to include a black strip that houses the tail lights that have three horizontal “claws”.
On the inside the e-208 comes with a 10.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with satellite navigation, as well as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This infotainment system can receive software updates over-the-air.
On the safety front, the Peugeot e-208 comes with the following safety equipment:
- Autonomous emergency braking
- Blind-spot monitoring
- Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go
- Driver attention alert
- Road sign recognition
Globally, the refreshed Peugeot 208 line-up is available in three different variants: Active, Allure and GT.
At this stage it’s unclear which e-208 variant or variants will be offered locally. The e-2008 electric crossover that’s set to arrive locally later in 2023 is only offered in a single GT specification.
Another thing that’s unclear is how much the Peugeot e-208 will cost locally. The Peugeot e-2008 which will use a previous version of e-208’s electric powertrain is priced at $59,900 before on-road costs.
The light electric car segment has been heating up locally however, with the MG 4, BYD Dolphin and GWM Ora all currently priced in entry-level form at under $40,000 before on-roads.
