Peugeot’s horny Toyota Camry different getting facelift


Peugeot has teased its updated 508 mid-sizer in a fast-paced YouTube video, ending it with the hashtag #PSE.

That refers to the model’s current performance flagship – not offered here – called the Sport Engineered, or PSE for short.

Peugeot will reveal the vehicle on February 24, and based on the video we can expect to see a new grille with the brand’s updated logo. A new wheel design has also been teased.

It’s unclear if the plug-in hybrid PSE will come here as part of the updated range.

Revealed in 2020, the PSE features a turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder plug-in hybrid powertrain with total system outputs of 268kW of power and 520Nm of torque, good for a 0-100km/h time of 5.2 seconds.

There’s an electric motor on each axle, giving the PSE all-wheel drive, and an 11.5kWh lithium-ion battery under the boot floor.

Claimed electric range is 42km.

While Peugeot has introduced a milder, front-wheel drive plug-in hybrid 508 fastback and plans to add a wagon version of it in the first half of this year, it has ruled out the PSE.

“The PSE is fairly limited in the number in production, so right now we’re not considering it for this market but if ever there comes a time when we can, we definitely will,” said Kate Gillis, managing director of Peugeot Citroen Australia, late last year.

“But it certainly won’t be here in the short-term,” she added.

Recent spy shots suggest the 508 range will receive a new headlight design and tail light graphics, in addition to the new badging.

It’s also expected to receive the brand’s latest-generation infotainment system.

The 508 is currently available with a turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine with 165kW of power and 300Nm of torque.

Optional on the fastback is a plug-in hybrid powertrain with a turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine mated with a 11.8kWh lithium-ion battery, and features a single 80kW/230Nm electric motor.

All models in Australia are front-wheel drive.

Pricing for the line-up starts at $63,431 before on-road costs for the 508 GT fastback, rising to $65,657 before on-roads for the Sportswagon and topping out at $81,610 before on-roads for the plug-in hybrid GT fastback.

It’s not clear how much the PHEV wagon will cost, however if the fastback is anything to go by it could command an $18,000 or so premium.

The 508 is in a unique spot within the Australian market as no mass-market mid-sizer offers a plug-in hybrid powertrain, while luxury brand rivals like the BMW 330e are more expensive.
