A number of General Motors (GM) vehicle owners with OnStar connected services have taken to social media after their phone apps were telling them to inflate the tyres to obscene levels.
Affected vehicle owners posted on a number of different Facebook owner’s groups, as picked up by GM-Trucks and The Drive, showing their connected services phone app was notifying them that their vehicle had critically low tyre pressure.
Depending on the vehicle, the phone app was then recommending the vehicle owner to inflate the tyres well beyond the placarded amount. In one example, an owner was told to inflate their vehicle’s tyres to 1279psi.
As a general rule of thumb, regular passenger vehicle tyres are inflated to around 30-40psi, and cannot safely be inflated beyond 50psi. Semi-truck and tractor tyres, for context, are typically inflated to 100psi.
The vehicles affected by this issue include the Chevrolet Corvette and Silverado and Cadillac Lyriq. It’s unclear if any Buick or GMC vehicle with OnStar connected services was affected.
This issue appears to have been limited to North America, as Australian-specification GM vehicles don’t have OnStar connected services.
GM-Trucks reports GM is aware of the issue and it has already been resolved. The impacted customers have already been notified.
