Porsche rejects struggling Volkswagen software program in favour of Google

Future generations of Porsche vehicles will feature embedded Google services, starting from the middle of this decade.

The German carmaker is the latest in a long line of carmakers to incorporate Google’s infotainment technology, joining the likes of General Motors, Renault and Volvo.

The “long-term partnership” will see Porsche vehicles offer Google built-in, which includes Google Maps, Google Assistant, and a “wide variety of apps available through the Google Play Store”.

The brand claims its customers will continue to find a familiar user experience through its Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system and maintain over-the-air updates to ensure its software systems are kept up-to-date.

Porsche had been relying on the Volkswagen Group’s troubled software division, Cariad, for the infotainment of its upcoming all-electric Macan SUV, which it was forced to delay.

The Porsche Macan EV was originally slated to be revealed in 2022, but after constant delays it was pushed to 2023, and now 2024.

Automotive News now reports word from Porsche managers the Macan’s 1.2 software architecture has been delayed by a further 16-18 weeks.

The news outlet reports Cariad is still cleaning house after replacing its CEO earlier this year. It will axe 2000 jobs between 2024 and the end of 2025.

Earlier this year Porsche announced a deeper Apple CarPlay integration which allows Cayenne drivers to access climate control, ambient lighting, radio station, and audio settings without having to exit the iPhone integration software.

The integration uses the My Porsche App and advanced capabilities of Apple CarPlay to “deliver a truly enhanced customer experience”.

If you’re an Android user, don’t fret. In early 2022 Porsche announced it was adding wireless Android Auto, which is now available on Porsche 911TaycanCayenne and Panamera models.
