POTD: From .455 to .22 Through Parker-Hale – The Webley WS Goal

Welcome to today’s Photo of the Day! The Webley WS Target Model, introduced in 1904, represents an interesting evolution in target shooting revolvers. Initially designed as a .455 caliber weapon combining the WG model’s square grip with the Mark IV’s mechanics, this particular example showcases period conversion technology through its Parker-Hale .22 caliber modification kit. The conversion included an 8 3/8-inch barrel insert with muzzle nut, washer, and rear flanges, plus an additional rear sight and shortened cylinder. The Webley WS Target retains its original Webley markings from both London and Birmingham factories while bearing Parker-Hale cylinder marks and “AGP/BISLEY/WORKS” on the barrel flange. The front sight, pinned and marked for 50 yards, complements a drift-adjustable notch sight. While Webley did produce some purpose-built .22 rimfire WS revolvers with stepped cylinders, this example represents the more common conversion approach, allowing shooters to practice with less expensive ammunition while maintaining their service revolvers’ familiar handling characteristics.

“This revolver started as a standard W.S. Target Model revolver as introduced in 1904 in .455 caliber and has since been fitted with a Parker-Hale .22 caliber conversion kit consisting of a barrel insert (8 3/8 inch in length) with muzzle nut and washer and rear flanges with an additional rear sight along with a short .22 caliber cylinder. There are various British proofs throughout, “P. WEBLEY & SON. LONDON & BIRMINGHAM.” on the rib, other standard Webley markings, Parker-Hale markings on the cylinder and “AGP/BISLEY/WORKS” on the left side of the barrel flange. It has a pinned blade front sight marked “50 YDS” and a drift adjustable notch sight on the break. It is fitted with as set of checkered walnut grips and a lanyard loop. The right grip panel has “L2005” (faint) marked on the top and the bottom of the barrel has been electro penciled “5F3529″.”
