Welcome to today’s Photo of the Day! The Ruger No. 1, introduced in 1967 by Sturm, Ruger & Co., is a single-shot rifle featuring a Farquharson-style hammerless falling-block action. Known for its exceptional strength and reliability, the rifle uses an underlever to lower the breechblock for loading and to cock the mechanism. It incorporates a shotgun-style tang safety that works on both the hammer and sear. The No. 1 has been offered with various forearm styles, including Alexander Henry, beavertail, and Mannlicher designs. Its versatility is showcased in the wide range of calibers it has been chambered for over the years, from small varmint cartridges like the .204 Ruger to large dangerous game rounds such as the .458 Lott. As of 2024, the rifle continues to be produced in select calibers, including the .257 Weatherby Magnum, 6.5 Creedmoor, .270 Winchester, and .275 Rigby. The Ruger No. 1’s enduring popularity stems from its robust design, accuracy, and ability to handle a diverse array of cartridges, making it suitable for various hunting and shooting applications.
