Proof That Fall is the Time to Go to Montgomery County


It’s the best time of the year to get outdoors and take a scenic road trip adventure. Montgomery County is transforming into a picture-perfect canvas of golds, yellows, oranges, and deep reds right before our eyes. While You’re There: Stroll through 50 acres of beautiful gardens and spectacular landscapes filled with vibrant colors. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, follow the Pine Lake Trail and have a picnic lunch at Wheaton Regional Park.

While You’re There: This stunning Maryland State Park encompasses 6,300 acres and extends along 14 scenic miles of Seneca Creek in Montgomery County. Hiking trails, picnic areas, and a playground surround the 90-acre Clopper Lake. You can hike the trail around the lake for fall views or simply drive over to King Fisher’s viewpoint to get a breathtaking look at nearly the entire lake. The boathouse is another lovely spot for leaf-peeping.

While You’re There: Step back and time and interpret the history of the area in Montgomery County. As you ride your bike down the nearly completely level towpath, you’ll find several canal locks once used to help boats navigate their way along the canal. You’ll also find the houses of the former lockkeepers who lived nearby to manage the canal system.  If you’re looking to extend your experience, consider renting a lock house through the C&O Canal Quarters Program.

While You’re There: Spend the day exploring the rural side of Montgomery County. Pick your own pumpkins at Butler’s Orchard or Homestead Farm. Then savor the flavors of fall with a locally produced craft beverage at a farm brewery or winery along the Tastemakers Trail.

While You’re There: Lace up your hiking boots and bring your furry friend on a fun trek up one of four dog-friendly circuit trails. If you’re not into a workout, you can always drive up and take photos of the breathtaking views. Afterward, stop by Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard for a glass of Cabernet Franc and enjoy lunch at the base of the mountain at The Comus Inn.

While You’re There: Spend the afternoon with friends and family, while hiking the popular Billy Goat Trail or stopping by the scenic overlooks of rolling rapids along the Potomac River. Chat with a National Park Service Park Ranger at the Great Falls Tavern Visitors Center to learn about the history of the falls. Across the street is a perfect place to enjoy an evening meal at Old Angler’s Inn.
