Qatar Airways intends to acquire a 25 percent equity stake in Virgin Australia from Bain Capital, subject to regulatory approval, the carriers announced Tuesday. Financial terms of the deal were undisclosed.
The deal would enable Virgin Australia to launch flights from Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney to Doha, which through Qatar’s global network would connect to more than 100 new connecting itineraries across Europe, the Middle East and Africa for Australian travelers, according to Virgin Australia.
The expanded codeshare and collaboration arrangement also would provide increased earn and redemption opportunities for members of the Velocity and Qatar Airways’ Privilege Club loyalty programs, according to Virgin Australia.
