The Mitsubishi Triton is up 10-fold year-on-year in June.
New Zealand vehicle sales surge by a spectacular 96.1% year-on-year in June to 23,560, a new all time monthly volume record. This result is linked to Clean Car policy changes with customers rushing to register vehicles to avoid new fees. The previous record in March 2022 (21,004 sales) was also triggered by Clean Car Discount fees. The H1 2023 volume tilts into positive territory at +3.5% to 84,998. Passenger Cars are up 84.4% for the month to 3,777 and 16% share vs. 17% a year ago but remain down YTD at -2.9% to 13,888 and 16.3% share vs. 17.4% over H1 2022. SUVs gain 80.7% to 13,511 and 57.3% share vs. 62.2% in June 2022 and are up 13.6% YTD to 47,547 and 55.9% share vs. 51% last year. Light Commercials soar 197.5% to 5,570 and 23.6% share vs. 15.6% a year ago but down -8.8% YTD to 20,308 and 23.9% share vs. 27.1% over the first half of 2022.
In the brands ranking, Toyota (+141.8%) skyrockets to 22.7% share vs. 20.3% so far this year, leaving Mitsubishi (+44.9%) in the dust. Kia (+36.9%) also underperforms but gains 3 spots on May to #3. Ford (+251.7%) surges year-on-year but only manages 7.3% share vs. 10.2% over H1. Tesla (+8663.6%!) scores a surreal year-on-year gain and lifts to #7 overall while Haval (+455%) breaks into the Top 10 for the first time at #10 and a record 2.8% share and Volkswagen (+140.5%) is very solid at #9.
Over in the models charts, the Toyota Hilux (+120.9%) is back to pole position for the first time since last January but remains #2 year-to-date below the Ford Ranger (+333.3%) down to #4 this month despite a spectacular year-on-year evolution.
