Roam Resilient Baja Version Overland Trailer: Unique First Look

Roam Resilient Expedition Vehicles (RREV) Baja Edition will officially launch to the world on June 1, but we have the early exclusive scoop for you. This new rugged off-road trailer looks ready for extended off-grid adventures in remote locations.

The Baja Edition is the Redding, Calif., company’s first product offering. It’s been in development for over a year and is just now becoming a reality.

It has many of the rugged features we expect from an Australian off-road camper trailer while also incorporating many of the top-quality elements of a European expedition camper. Let’s dive into all this new overland trailer option has to offer.

RREV Construction

“One of the standout features of the Baja Edition is its ability to withstand extreme temperatures, both hot and cold. Its rugged construction and advanced insulation technology ensure comfort and functionality in the most challenging climates. Whether navigating the desert’s sweltering heat or braving winter’s icy chill, the Baja Edition offers a cozy and inviting refuge after a long day of adventure,” says Ian Hak, CEO/Head Designer and Engineer of RREV.

The walls of the RREV Baja Edition are 2.25 inches thick, while the floor is 3 inches thick. They are made of foam core PET skinned panels, with an outer aluminum skin fused to them. Aluminum extrusions hold the panels together at the corners, while 36 bolts also create a mechanical bond between walls and floor.

The nose cone storage box is all-aluminum construction, offering up big storage and improving the trailer’s aerodynamics. At the rear of the trailer is a composite module that offers up storage for recovery gear, a spare tire mount, a roof access ladder, and a mounting location for the custom 24V AC compressor/condenser made with Matsushita components.

All of that rides on a galvanized steel chassis and custom, in-house designed suspension. The panels and chassis are made in China, while all engineering and assembly happen in Northern California.

All the windows are double-pane glass, and there are seven in total, including the small window on the door. Two of the windows are mounted on safari hatches — one on the roof above the bed and one next to the dinette. Both offer amazing airflow and vistas over your surroundings from the comfort of the camper.

The floor plan of the RREV Baja Edition features a mid-side door, front bedroom, central living area, and rear full bathroom. This setup should make the camper feel quite spacious, while being relatively compact.

On offer are a queen-size bed, a dinette that will seat four, and a kitchen module. The kitchen has a big sink, large countertop, portable induction cooktop, and fridge. A full-size electric oven can even be optioned.

An outdoor kitchen is also standard, and pulls out of an exterior cabinet on the side of the trailer. The induction cooktop from inside can be used outside as well.

The rear bathroom is quite large for this size trailer. It has a cassette toilet — although an OGO composting toilet is optional — bowl sink, and a separate full shower.

Onboard Systems

Keeping all this interior living space comfortable is a Truma diesel air/water heater and a custom 24V A/C system. Roam Resilient says the 400Ah 24V lithium battery bank can keep the A/C running for 24 hours. On roof solar, 1,400W (1,900W option) is standard.

Controlling all the onboard 24V electronic systems is a custom Android control system. It offers touchscreen control in the camper, and app control when away from it. It also allows for over-the-air updates and remote flashing for new equipment installs and system troubleshooting.

The RREV Baja Edition has two freshwater tanks, supported by independent pumps, with a total capacity of 81 gallons. Additionally, it has a standalone 10-gallon drinking water tank with an independent pump and Acuva filtration system. All tanks are built into the chassis of the camper, with inside camper plumbing, in order to keep the water flowing no matter how cold it gets.

A cool feature of the camper is its water collection system. The front slope integrates a rainwater collection system, and the air conditioner drain pipe is plumbed to collect water, both filling the general water tank when needed. This system helps extend off-grid adventures.

Roam Resilient Suspension

One area in which this camper should excel is cruising down rough roads. It has a custom-engineered independent swingarm suspension that integrates 9,000-pound air springs and rear-mounted Fox monotube shocks.

The air suspension is controlled via Bluetooth to allow for a host of cool features. Think independent control of all four wheels for leveling, simultaneous adjustment of all air springs, independent control of front and rear wheels, tire changes, etc. You can also set three predetermined pressures — like freeway, gravel road, and hitching — for quick and easy adjustment of the trailer stability. Roam Resilient also offers an optional load-sharing and terrain-based full-time auto-leveling system.

It also runs four 33-inch AT tires and a track width that should closely match many tow vehicles, especially full-size trucks. 33s are the largest tire that will work on this trailer well, mostly because the spare cutout location in the rear cowling is only designed to fit a 33 or smaller.

Pricing for other Roam Resilient Baja Edtion camper trailers starts at $120,000. However, the first 20 campers will be sold as Founders Editions at a discounted rate of $99,000. Five of these are already sold, with seven more deposits pending this weekend’s product launch with details.

The trailers will be sold direct from the company only, so no dealers, and there is expected to be a 3-4-month lead time on deliveries.
