Volkswagen is progressing with its plan to revive the Scout name and it seems that we will see its first products sooner than initially expected. Following the news that the brand’s first two models will be developed in cooperation with Austria’s Magna Steyr, an official teaser video confirms Scout will reveal at least one vehicle this summer. Whether it is a production model or a concept, that’s not known for the time being.
The 1:22-minute clip attached at the top of this page tells us where the marque took its inspiration from. As the company puts it, scouts are people who push the boundaries and take big steps forward, helping society evolve. At the end of the video, there’s a black screen with the announcement that the brand’s launch is scheduled for the summer of 2024.
The first teaser images of Scout suggested that a boxy SUV with short overhangs and a pickup truck are currently under development. In terms of design, those vehicles will take inspiration from the original International Harvester Scout produced between 1960 and 1980 as a competitor for Jeep. One big difference between the vintage off-roaders and their modern successors will be the powertrain as the Scout brand will focus entirely on purely electric vehicles.
While owned by Volkswagen, Scout won’t feature entirely technologies developed by the Wolfsburg-based firm. Instead, it will rely on a bespoke platform with a focus on off-roading. It is not known whether the only available powertrain will have two electric motors as three- and even quad-motor variants don’t seem totally out of the question. Possibly the wildest piece of information regarding Scout so far is that Audi might get its own version of the Scout SUV as a rival for the upcoming electric Mercedes-Benz G-Class. This is unconfirmed for the time being, though.
