September 2023 Grocery Spending – A Wholesome Slice of Life

We traveled to Utah for a full week of the month where I was reminded of why we eat 95% of our meals at home; eating out is expensive! But it is also fun so I fully embraced the convenience and enjoyment of it all, feeling certain that at least our grocery spending would be lower. LOL.

Between Hailey’s birthday and a fun trip to Trader Joe’s for some fall fun foods for when we had friends over, my total ended up being close to normal. Of course, this did include a major haul from Butcher Box, where I purchased 50+ lbs of meat. They were offering some great member deals and our freezer was getting empty, so I stocked up. They are offering an amazing deal right now and you can get free ground beef for life through this link.

I ended up spending roughly $200 less than in September 2022 though, and for fun, I took a look at my grocery spending for a week in 2014 where I listed the cost of every item I bought. Funny to see how some have increased substantially (bread flour) and others haven’t changed much at all (carrots).

I’m hopeful with my big Butcher Box haul that I won’t have to buy more for a couple months. We’ll see if that rings true. Ok, to the total!

Publix $111.18
Food Lion $28.48
Costco $325.52
Lowe’s Foods $88.68
Whole Foods $155.44
Butcher Box $375.26
Trader Joe’s $147.19
Total $1,231.75

Have you discovered any money saving tips lately? Where you shop? How you meal plan?

We had so much fun last night making homemade pasta as a family for the first time. To make it I bought all the fancy stuff- the 00 flour, the semolina flour, and my favorite Vital Farm eggs. I reminded myself how much I love to play in the kitchen with new recipes *BUT* it also reminded me that in the season I’m in, it’s much more about getting a healthy, relatively easy meal on the table with the least amount of effort possible. Still, I’d love to incorporate more kitchen play; we all got a thrill out of our homemade pasta and would love to try rolling sushi and other culinary adventures.

Well, that was a tangent! This coming month I plan to stick to my usual, which seems to be alternating trips at Whole Foods (shopping the sales) and Costco (to stock up on the staples). I’d love to shop more local farmers market and buy more local produce, but I haven’t found a way to incorporate that easily in life’s current season either.

Ok, happy Monday! We have a full day ahead, so off to make breakfast and get things rolling. I hope you have a great day!
