Simple Apple Upside Down Cake: A Cozy Fall Deal with

Indulge in the cozy flavors of fall with this irresistible spicy apple upside down cake. Unlike traditional recipes that use white sugar, this cake features brown sugar for a rich, molasses-like sweetness that perfectly compliments the apples and spices. The addition of crunchy walnuts adds a delightful texture and nutty flavor.

This apple upside down cake has been a beloved family recipe for years, passed down from my other grandmother. The warm and comforting flavors remind me of her kitchen, which was always filled with the delectable aroma of cinnamon. She had an apple tree and loved to make homemade apple pies and cakes. Inspired by her, I planted my own apple tree, growing from a cutting of hers. We enjoyed many delicious apple treats from that tree until it sadly needed to be cut down. While I’m not sure of the exact variety, the apples were a bit sweeter than Granny Smiths.

Apple Upside Down Cake Recipe

1/4 cup of butter
2 cups of peeled, thinly sliced apples
1 ½ cups sifted flour
½ teaspoons of ground cloves
1 teaspoon of baking powder, leveled
1 large egg
3/4 cup of buttermilk or sour milk
1-3/4 cups of firmly packed brown sugar
2 tablespoons of chopped walnuts
1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon of allspice
½ teaspoons of baking soda, leveled
1/3 cup of canola oil

  1. Put one-fourth cups of butter (half of a stick) in a pan to melt while preheating the oven to 350-degrees.
  2. Remove from oven and sprinkle the bottom of your well-greased square 8×8-inch pan or 9x9x2-inch size with one cup of the brown sugar.
  3. Sprinkle with the chopped nuts and cinnamon.
  4. Arrange the thinly sliced apples in rows next.
  5. In a mixing bowl, add the oil, the remaining brown sugar, and egg until well mixed.
  6. Add some of the flour, allspice, cloves, baking powder alternately with the buttermilk mixed with the baking soda until well combined.
  7. Pour batter over apple slices in the pan next.
  8. Bake at 350-degrees for about 30 minutes, depending on how your oven is regulated or how thickly you sliced the apples. It could be 40 minutes if sliced a bit thicker. Test with a toothpick, cake tester or slender knife to see if anything sticks for determining doneness.
  9. Let this cake remain in the pan for about five or ten minutes before attempting to turn it upside down on your tray.
  10. ENJOY!
