46,339 new cars hit Slovenian roads in 2022, a hefty -14.2% year-on-year fall. This is the weakest annual tally in at least 21 years. Brand leader Volkswagen (-14.3%) follows the market to an identical share at 15.9%. Skoda (-18.9%) goes from 10.5% to 9.9% share but takes advantage of Renault’s freefall (-35.6%) to grab the second spot overall. Hyundai (-11.9%) remains at #4 while Toyota (+30.8%) surges four spots to #5. Opel (+36.7%) is the other spectacular gainer in the Top 10, up six ranks to #9. Kia (-2.5%) also resists at #6 but Citroen (-14.8%), Dacia (-24%) and Peugeot (-25.8%) all lose more ground than the market. Cupra (+86.8%), Tesla (+54%) and Jeep (+33.2%) defy the negative market below.

Model-wise, we have a historical event at #1: the Skoda Octavia (-22.3%) ends 25 years of domination by the Renault Clio (-52.2%) completely imploding to #3. This is all the more significant that the Clio is produced locally. It only ranked #1 in January and February. The VW T-Roc (+2.2%) is up four spots to #2, also outselling the Clio. The Kia Sportage (+21.7%) and VW Tiguan (+6.3%) post splendid gains to round out the Top 5. The Renault Captur (-32%) and VW T-Cross (-46%) freefall below, with the Hyundai Tucson (-16.9%), Skoda Kodiaq (-2.4%) and Fiat 500 (-14.8%) closing the Top 10. The latter ranked #1 twice in May and December. Just outside, the Toyota Yaris Cross (+456.7%) ends its first full year of sales at #11. The VW Taigo (#16) is the best-selling 2022 launch above the Dacia Jogger (#53).
