If there is an address that evokes eternal love stories, it is at Quinta das Lágrimas, a historic hotel in the city of Coimbra, which receives illustrious guests every year. Chris Martin, lead singer of Coldplay, is the latest name to join the list, information confirmed by the hotel on Instagram.

It was during the 14th century that a classic story worthy of being immortalized by Shakespeare took place in Portugal, as it is about a Lusitanian “Romeo and Juliet”. Pedro was the son of the king of Portugal, heir to the throne, and Inês was a maid who came along with the Spanish princess D. Constança Manuel, Pedro’s future wife. But, by accident of fate, Pedro I and Inês de Castro end up falling in love and start a romance, initiating a great political drama.

There are many references to the love between D. Pedro and D. Inês and the main one is the Quinta das Lágrimas Garden with the fountains immortalized by Luís de Camões.

The epicenter is the Garden of Quinta das Lágrimas. Two simple fountains. The Amores, the place of passionate and discreet encounters between D. Pedro and D. Inês and the Fonte das Lágrimas, the representation of the death of Inês when she was murdered on January 7, 1335.

The tears of her death are eternal in the red of the algae in the fountain that Camões baptized in the Lusíadas, “the tears are water and the name amores”.

In an 18th century palace, built on a property that is almost seven centuries old, linked to the tragic passion of Pedro and Inês, the Hotel Quinta das Lágrimas was born.

This is a five-star hotel full of history and legends, on an estate that is almost seven centuries old, inseparable from those in love, but also from Queen Santa Isabel, Pedro’s grandmother. It was she who, in 1326, ordered a canal to be built to take water from two springs at Quinta das Lágrimas (formerly Quinta do Pombal) to the nearby Santa Clara-a-Velha Monastery. The Duke of Wellington also passed by there in 1813. During his visit, two sequoias were planted and are still standing, majestic.

The hotel, in an old 18th-century palace rebuilt after a fire in 1879 and surrounded by 12 hectares of gardens, owes much of its magnetism to its outdoor spaces.

There are 55 rooms in different styles, spread over three wings: palace, garden and new wing. The spa is in the new wing, designed by architect Gonçalo Byrne. Guests have access to two swimming pools (one outdoor and one indoor, with heated water), the golf academy (for a separate fee), but also to two heritage jewels: the chapel, unconsecrated, once used for family weddings; and the imposing library, dominated by wood, with its elaborate ceiling, skylight and hidden staircase – another secret to be discovered.
