If you own a SRAM brake lever, it might need a quick fix to avoid causing injuries.
On Thursday, SRAM announced a recall of 61,300 brake levers with faulty clamp bolts that pose a crash hazard to riders. A notice filed with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said the clamp bolts could shake loose if not properly tightened.
No accidents or injuries have been reported, according to the recall notice. However, SRAM is asking all customers with affected brake levers to get a free brake installation at an authorized dealer. It’s also possible for owners to address the issue themselves, with the company offering a written guide and a YouTube video.
“All 12-speed SRAM eTap AXS RED, Force, Rival, and Apex shift-brake levers which were not installed by a bicycle dealer on a new bicycle are involved in this recall,” the company wrote. “If your levers were on a complete new bicycle purchased at or installed by a bicycle dealer, no action is required.”
These shift-brake levers have been sold at specialty bicycle stores and online for $220-675 since June 2019. The recall only affects levers produced before July 1, 2023.
