111,524 new cars found a buyer in Hungary in 2022, that’s a -8.5% year-on-year decline on 2021. This is down -12.9% on 2020 which was heavily impacted by Covid-19. At 8,001 sales, December 2022 was down over 50% on pre-pandemic December 2019. Only two months surpassed the symbolic 10,000 sales milestone vs. 6 in 2021: March (11,149) and May (10,138). Local producer Suzuki (-6.3%) manages to keep the brands pole position in extremis and thanks to a very strong December result at 24.6% share. Toyota (+9.8%) was #1 up until end November. Volkswagen (+46.2%) posts by far the largest year-on-year uptick in the Top 10 and climbs four spots to land on the third step of the podium. Ford (-19.7%), Kia (-10.9%), Skoda (-11.9%) and Dacia (-17%) all drop one rank and fall faster than the market. The last 3 models in the Top 10 are in positive: BMW (+17.8%) fares best and is up three spots to #9, with Opel (+1.9%) up to #10 and Mercedes (+1.3%) up to #8. Outside the Top 10, Audi (+35.9%) stands out whereas Fiat (-54.4%) implodes.

Model-wise, the Suzuki S-Cross (+14.8%) enjoys the benefits of its new generation to score a Hungarian annual win for the first time in the history of the nameplate. It topples the Suzuki Vitara (-34%) after 6 straight years of domination from the latter. The Kia Ceed (+1.5%) is up two spots on last year to #3 ahead of the Toyota Corolla (-0.7%) up four and the Dacia Duster (-27.2%) down one. The Skoda Octavia (-14.7%) is up one rank on 2021 to #6 despite a sizeable fall. The performer of the Top 10 is the VW T-Roc (+166.9%) up 19 spots to #7. In contrast the Fiat 500 (-55.4%) freefalls to #8. The Toyota Yaris (+7.1%) and RAV4 (+7.2%) both brave the negative context to break into the Top 10. We have five additional newcomers in the 2022 Top 20: the Toyota Yaris Cross at #12 (and up to #3 in December), the Ssangyong Korando at #16, the Ford Kuga at #17, the Hyundai i30 at #19 and the new Dacia Jogger at #20.
