When New York Pilates founder Heather Andersen teaches Pilates, she’s teaching four to five classes in a row. She likes wearing makeup when she’s in front of a room full of people, but given that she’s sweating right along with them, she needs products that will stay put and look fresh for hours on end. While powdered makeup tends to have better longevity than cream products, Andersen hates these types of mattifying formulas. Thankfully, she’s found the perfect sweat-proof makeup that will give her a dewy, hydrated look no matter how many planks she’s leading her clients through.

“My approach to makeup in general, at least for daytime makeup, is really low-key,” says Andersen. “My vibe is just sunscreen, a little coverage, and a little color. If I have powders on my skin, even like a powder eyeshadow or a powder blush, I just feel like it just sits in my creases and makes my skin look dry and cakey, and I’ve always hated it. But if I have cream-based products on my skin, maybe I look a little shiny, but I also don’t look dry.

The anchor of this low-key, sweat-proof makeup routine is the Ilia Super Serum Skin Tint ($48). Andersen loves the way it feels on her dry-to-combination skin. “It’s an SPF 40 and super moisturizing,” says Andersen. “I like that it’s hydrating because I feel like a lot of times your skin dries out while you’re wearing makeup all day.”

On days when she’s going to be outside a lot, running from studio to studio, she reaches for the Undefined Beauty R&R Sun Serum ($28). “It’s an SPF 50 and it’s swim and sweatproof for 40 minutes,” says Andersen. “Obviously, if I’m teaching classes four or five classes in a row, that’s longer than that 40-minute period. But because it’s waterproof, it just stays put.” She also likes the tone of it on her skin, which is a subtle beige to camouflage the white cast.

Next, Andersen adds some color. “The only reason I put any other makeup on my face is because once you have that tint on, you’re sort of one color,” says Andersen. “I use the Nars Afterglow Lip Balm ($28). It’s just a lip balm stick and it’s really shiny and pretty. I just use that in two colors—I use one color on my lips and then a lighter color on my eyelids and cheeks.”

Finally, Andersen wraps her look with the Ilia Limitless Lash Lengthening Mascara ($28). “It isn’t waterproof but it seems to stay in place, which I think is actually one of the most important things,” she says. “Because your mascara is the one thing that will like really give you away if you’re like starting to sweat. It will remove itself from your eyelashes and then end up on your cheeks, which is a serious bummer.”
