The Tesla Model Y holds 10.6% of the Swedish market in March.
New car sales in Sweden return to positive in March at +5.4% to 30,261 units. This means the first quarter tally is down -9.2% to 63,304. BEV volumes are up 37.6% to 12,577 and a record 41.6% share vs. 31.8% in March 2022 but PHEVs sink -18.6% to 5,540 and 18.3% share vs. 23.7% last year. As a whole, rechargeable cars are up 14% to 18,177 and a whopping 59.9% share vs. 55.6% a year ago.
Tesla (+67.4%) surges ahead to take the overall brands pole position for the first time in Swedish history, also smashing its volume (3,940) and share (13%) records. Volvo (-23.2%) is relegated to 2nd place with 12% share while Volkswagen also drops one spot on February to #3 and 8.5%. Toyota (+15.3%) beats the market to stay at #4 ahead of Kia (-20.4%) down two ranks to #5. MG (+111%) breaks into the Top 10 for the first time this year at #10 just as Skoda (+63.2%) and Audi (+17%) both outrace the market. Notice also Mazda (+686.7%) soaring to #11 and Citroen (+220.5%) and Cupra (+80.2%) in excellent shape.
Over in the models ranking, the Tesla Model Y (+134.9%) flies off in the distance with a record 3,202 sales and 10.6% share, going from #13 after two months to #1 over the first quarter of 2022. The Volvo XC40 (-7.2%) loses its title and drops to #2 while the VW ID.4 (-0.9%) stays at #3 despite a slight year-on-year decline. The Volvo XC60 (-30.1%) and Tesla Model 3 (-28.1%) are in freefall and round out the Top 5. The Toyota Corolla (-2.1%) rallies back up 66 spots on February to #6 with the Kia EV6 (+99.6%) and Toyota Yaris Cross (+83.2%) both euphoric. The Mazda CX-60 justifies the brand’s surge by a 43 rank gain over last month to #11.
