The Polestar 2 breaks its ranking and volume records in May.
The Swedish new car market is up for only the second month this year at +7.9% to 28,490 units in May. The year-to-date total is however still in negative at -4.8% to 112,380. BEVs are up a spectacular 82.6% year-on-year to 11,657 sales and 40.9% share vs. 24.2% in May 2022. For their part PHEVs drop -2.7% to 5,975 and 21% vs. 23.2% a year ago. In the brands ranking, local actor Volvo (+24%) comfortably outrace the market to easily hold onto the top spot with 16% share, distancing Volkswagen (-10.3%) at 10.5%. Tesla soars 693.9% year-on-year and seven spots month-on-month to end the month at #3 with 8.7% share vs. #5 and 7% year-to-date. Toyota (+1.6%) and Kia (-26.9%) follow, both underperforming. Skoda (+38.2%) and Audi (+32.5%) also shine while MG (+40.1%) is back inside the Top 10 at #10.
Model-wise, the Tesla Model Y (+509.9%) skyrockets to the first place with 6.7% share, cementing its YTD dominance (+171.5%). The Volvo XC40 (+38.3%) threepeats at #2 with 5.1% share while the Volvo XC60 (+56.3%) is down two spot on last month to #3. The VW ID.4 (+27.2%) ranks at #4 just as the Polestar 2 (+120.6%) is up a smashing 46 ranks on April to round out the Top 5, breaking its ranking and volume records. The Kia Niro (-19.4%) is in difficulty at #6, the Volvo C40 (+1012%) is back up 16 ranks on April to #7 with the Skoda Enyaq (+32.5%) and Toyota RAV4 (+9.8%) also beating the market just below.
