Tesla Mannequin Y storms onto world gross sales podium – analyst

The Tesla Model Y was the third best-selling vehicle across a chunk of the globe in 2022.

Felipe Muñoz, a global automotive analyst who works at market research firm JATO Dynamics, has compiled a list of the 500 best-selling vehicles across 52 countries in 2022.

There is a caveat here: Mr Muñoz wasn’t able to source sales data for markets such as Libya, Chad, Papua New Guinea, Cuba and Cambodia.

He also advises the data is sourced not only from official national car sales associations, but also local contacts, automakers, and estimations.

However, this is the closest thing to a complete list out there. Per the data, new vehicle sales were down by two per cent in 2022 to 79.4 million units.

Combined, China, Canada, Europe and the United States reportedly account for 69 per cent of global sales.

There are some quirks of this data reporting, with some vehicles split out by body style – for example, the Toyota Corolla wagon is reported separately, while sales are also split by variant for model lines such as the Audi A4, Mazda 3 and Mercedes-Benz A-Class.

However, there don’t appear to be any vehicles that threaten the Model Y’s bronze finish. The rest of the top 20 is as follows:

  1. Toyota RAV4/Wildlander: 1,015,700 sales, down 10 per cent
  2. Toyota Corolla/Levin sedan: 991,600 sales, down 10 per cent
