The Swedish new car market edges up 0.6% year-on-year in 2023 to 289,665 units. BEVs are up 18% to 38.7% share vs. 33% last year while PHEVs down -8.4% to 20.9% share vs. 23% in 2022. As a result, the market share of rechargeable vehicles is up to 60% this year vs. 56% last year. The Top 3 manufacturers trail the market with year-on-year losses. Volvo (-10%) retains the top spot with 14.3% share, a full 1.6 percentage point below its 2022 level. Volkswagen (-2.8%) resists better at 11.3% share and was #1 in the monthly ranking from June to September. Kia (-18.3%) is hit hard at 8.4% share vs. 10.4% in 2022 and didn’t manage any monthly win unlike in 2021 and 2022. Toyota (+0.7%) manages a tiny uptick to remains in 4th place. The best performer in the Top 10 by far is Tesla (+121.4%), up five spots to #5 and even topping the ranking outright in March. Audi (+33.6%) and Skoda (+19%) also shine in the remainder of the Top 10. Below, BYD (+217.1%) cracks the Top 20 at #19. We welcome NIO (#38), Hongqi (#41), Ineos (#47) and Wey (#56) in the charts.
Model-wise, the Tesla Model Y (+150.6%) obliterates the competition, ranking #1 in March, May, June, August and September. It peaked at 10.8% share in September. This is only the 2nd time in over 60 years that a Volvo doesn’t hold the annual pole position after the VW Beetle was #1 1962 and the VW Golf led in 2016. As a result the Volvo XC40 (-4.5%) and XC60 (-3.1%) are downgraded to #2 and #3 respectively. The XC40 was #1 in January, February, October, November and December while the XC60 led in April and July. The VW ID.4 (+24%) is up one spot on 2022 to #4 while the Skoda Enyaq (+45%) is up 9 to #5. The rest of the Top 10 post losses, with the Kia Ceed (-39.3%), Volvo S/V60 (-36.1%) and Kia Niro (-31.6%) hit the hardest. Notice also the Audi Q4 e-Tron (+103.3%) up to #11 and the BMW i4 (+196%) up to #14. The BYD Atto 3 (+202.3%) is up 58 ranks to #20 and was up to an extraordinary 2nd place in July.
