The first examples of the Suzuki Jimny XL, previously referred to as the Jimny 5 Door, have arrived in Australia ahead of customer deliveries starting in January 2024.
Suzuki Australia general manager Michael Pachota shared this information, along with a photo of a black Australian-specification Jimny XL with the personalised number plate ‘JBOXXL’, on a Jimny Facebook owners group.
This is the first time the Jimny XL name has been publicly confirmed as the Australian-market name for this stretched, five-door version of the boxy off-roader.
Mr Pachota also revealed pricing and specifications for the Jimny XL will be detailed at the media launch day on December 5.
At this stage it’s unclear how much the Suzuki Jimny XL will cost in Australia. The current three-door model starts at $30,490 before on-roads for the Jimny Lite manual, and extends to $33,490 before on-roads for the Jimny GLX automatic.
As previously reported, the Suzuki Jimny XL is 340mm longer than the regular three-door model, all of this in the wheelbase. Ground clearance is a claimed 210mm.
There are no changes to the drivetrain to handle the added bulk, with the current 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine carrying over. This is mated to a part-time four-wheel drive system with low-range, and available with five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission choices.
Unlike the Japan-made three-door Jimny, the Jimny XL is being assembled in India for export to Australia.
Earlier this year when three-door Jimny automatic orders were briefly reopened, Suzuki Australia claimed it had received over 1500 pre-orders for the Jimny XL.
It’s unclear what supply of the Jimny XL will look like when it launches locally.
The three-door model initially was more popular as a manual, though the sales split shifted over time to the automatic – hence orders for the latter being paused in the face of rampant demand.
To the end of October, Suzuki has sold 4426 Jimnys – behind the Swift with 5827 sales. The more practical Jimny XL will likely push Jimny sales to even greater heights.
