Chronotype is the natural tendency of a person to be more alert and active at certain times of the day, while circadian rhythm is the internal body clock that regulates the sleep-wake cycle and other biological functions. Understanding your chronotype can help you align your daily schedule with your natural energy levels and preferences. Therefore, if you’ve been wondering why you seem to drag at certain times like early morning and have vigor later in the day, then there is a good reason. In this post, I’ll share how to find your chronotype in order to enhance your productivity, sleep and happiness.

Genetics, age and various other components such as personality traits to your geographic location can contribute to your chronotype. This sounds confusing, but to find your particular chronotype is easier once you think about the best time you go to bed, how energetic you feel through the day to when you usually eat your meals.

To boil it down, basically there are four chronotype personalities.

The lion chronotype is someone that usually wakes up as early as 5:00 a.m. This group gets the most done in the morning and feels less active toward evening. Usually, their bedtime is around 9:00 p.m.

The bear chronotype is where most people fall into. This group gets up around regular working hours of 7:00 a.m. and goes to bed around 11:00 p.m. They get most of their best work done the hours leading up to noon and feel less productive in the afternoons around 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.

The wolf chronotype is just the opposite of the lion. This group usually wakes at 9:00 a.m. and goes to bed around 12:00 a.m. This type is the most robust and creative in the afternoon hours.

The dolphin chronotype makes up the insomniacs. If you have a hard time sleeping and only catch a few hours, you may fall into this classification.

In case you’re still not certain how to find your chronotype, there is a quiz based on this research by Dr. Michael Breus that you may want to take. This can help put you in the right type.

So why does it make sense to find your chronotype you may ask? The reason is because it gives you a clearer perception of sleep patterns as well as what part of the day that you function at your best. It also helps you understand your eating habits in relation to your particular chronotype and the health of your heart, blood and blood vessels besides your mental health.
