476,987 new vehicles hit Taiwanese roads in 2023, a robust 11% year-on-year gain. We are now over the 2020 result (457,435), in fact this is the largest annual volume in 18 years, since the 514,626 units of 2005. EV sales advance 54.2% to 24,782 units or 5.4% vs. 3.7% in 2022. Toyota (+4.6%) dominates the brands ranking with 27.1% share vs. 28.7% a year ago. Honda (+11.1%) follows the market to stay in 2nd place with 6.4% share. Just 355 units below is the best performer of the year, Lexus (+55.6%) up five spots on 2022 to a flamboyant third place. Mercedes (+4.5%) is up one spot to #4 while Nissan (-5.8%) underperforms at #5. Hyundai (+44%) lodges the other great result of 2023, advancing four ranks to #6. Volkswagen (+36.2%) is also strong at #10.
The Toyota Corolla Cross (-5.5%) sees its market share thaw from 9.2% to 7.8% buy easily stays in pole position of the models charts in Taiwan. This is the third consecutive year the Corolla Cross is the most popular vehicle here, and our records show Taiwan is the only market in the world where it is #1. The Honda CR-V (+24.5%) is up three spots to #3, overtaking its archenemy the Toyota RAV4 (+4.9%). The Toyota Town Ace (+85%) and Corolla Altis (-7.4%) make it four Toyotas in the Top 5. The Lexus NX (+76.8%) and Tesla Model Y (+166.1%) post sensational gains in the remainder of the Top 10, a Top 10 the MG HS breaks into for the first time at #9.
