The Indonesian wholesales car market edges down -4% year-on-year in 2023 to 1,005,802 units, while retail sales are down -1.5% to 998,059. In the brands wholesales ranking, Toyota (+1.6%) goes against the negative market to improve to 33.5% share vs. 31.6% last year. In contrast Daihatsu (-7.2%) drops to 18.7%. Honda (+5.9%) soars from 12.5% to 13.8% of the market while the next two carmakers lose share: Suzuki is down -10.3% and Mitsubishi down -21.8%. Hyundai (+11.1%) is the only remaining Top 10 brand in positive. Note Wuling down -21.5% but the new Binguo EV (Bingo in China) launched in December and reached #17. Chery lands directly at #14. Retail-wise, Toyota (-1.2%) matches the market to 32.6% share above Daihatsu (+2.9%) and Honda (+2.1%).
Over in the models lane, thanks to a new generation the Toyota Kijang Innova (+41.6%) secures its first annual win in 18 years (since 2005) with 6.6% of the market. Note the Kijang Innova led the Indonesian charts for 28 consecutive years from 1977 to 2005. It was down to the wire atop the models charts this year, with the Honda Brio (+0.4%) leading the way at end November but ending the year at #4. The Toyota Avanza (+7.2%) stays at #2 above the Daihatsu Sigra (+20.1%). Its twin the Toyota Calya (+5.1%) is up four spots to #5, distancing the Daihatsu Gran Max Pikap (-11.5%), Suzuki Carry Pikap (-23.6%) and Mitsubishi Xpander (-17.2%). The Honda HR-V (+6.1%) inserts itself inside the Top 10. The most popular 2023 launch is the Toyota Yaris Cross (#30) ahead of the Wuling Alvez (#32).
