Trottenberg Named Performing FAA Head

President Biden has named Polly Trottenberg to serve as acting Federal Aviation Administration administrator, effective immediately, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced Thursday. Trottenberg replaces Billy Nolen, who was appointed acting FAA administrator in April 2022 and announced this past April that he would step down by summer.

Trottenberg, with more than 30 years of public service, most recently was deputy secretary to DOT secretary Pete Buttigieg. She also led the New York City Transportation Department from 2014 to 2020 and served as a legislative staffer in the U.S. Senate for 12 years. She also worked at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

The Biden administration is conducting a national search for a nominee to become the permanent FAA administrator, a position that carries a five-year term and must be confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
