Uber: Journeys Attain New Excessive in ‘Strongest Ever’ Quarter

The fourth quarter was Uber’s “strongest quarter ever,” Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said during a Wednesday earnings call.

The company also “reached several new milestones this quarter,” he said. It crossed 2 billion quarterly trips, and its “mobility consumer base exceeded 100 million for the first time in our history,” he said. “The Uber platform has never been stronger.”

The company did not mention Uber for Business during the call or in its U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing related to fourth-quarter and year-end results.

Uber reported fourth-quarter gross bookings of $30.75 billion, an increase of 19 percent year over year. Mobility accounted for $14.89 billion of gross bookings, for 48.4 percent of the total.

Net income for the quarter was $595 million on revenue of $8.61 billion. Compared with the fourth quarter of 2021, net income was down 33 percent while revenue increased 49 percent.

Full-year gross bookings were $115.4 billion, up 28 percent year over year. Uber reported a net loss of $9.14 billion on full-year revenue of $31.88 billion, the latter of which increased 83 percent for the period.

The number of trips during the quarter was 2.1 billion, a quarterly record, and up 19 percent year over year. Full-year trips were 7.64 billion, up 20 percent from 2021. For the quarter, there were 131 million monthly active platform consumers, up 11 percent year over year.

The United States and Canada accounted for 57.8 percent of quarterly revenue at $4.98 billion, up 38 percent year over year. Europe, the Middle East and Africa increased 110 percent to $2.09 billion.

During the quarter, the company launched its Uber One membership program in Chile, France, Japan, Spain and Taiwan, and it is now available in 12 countries. “We got over 12 million members up, with membership having nearly doubled for 2022, which is terrific,” Khosrowshahi said. “Our efforts here are quite active. We are pushing Uber One.”
