Utilizing a Comply with-up lure to Catch Quick-striking Bass

Bass fishing is a game. And sometimes you have to think like a fish to win the game. Professional bass fisherman Jason Pittman of Covington, LA said there’s nothing worse than short-striking bass, especially when those blow-ups are big! Pittman was fishing a place called Poole’s Bluff. It’s a section of the East Pearl River located in Sun, LA.

Pittman made plans to use two baits on this day. “I wanted to try a 2-bait approach. My primary bait being a buzz bait. Then, if I don’t hook-up, I’ll throw a Mister Twister Comida SI as a follow-up bait,” he said.

Pittman was beating the bank with a white buzz bait made by Prototype Lures. “The blade on the buzz bait actually allows its blade to click on the head of the lure which maked it louder than normal buzz baits,” he said.

As he reeled in the topwater lure, a bass followed the lure all the way to the boat and decided to blow up on the bait at the last inute. Pittman swung and missed the bass and cast out again, but the bass didn’t strike.  A few yards down the shoreline, the same thing happened. While reeling in the lure, a bass exploded on it. Pittman once again set the hook and missed, but this time, he reached down for another rod. “I had another rod with a Mister Twister Comida tied on,” he said. “That rod serves as my follow-up rod.”

Pittman whipped out the wacky-rigged Comida SI into the same exact place the bass exploded on his buzzbait. He twitched it 3 times and spotted the line move left. He set the hook and connected with the bass, and after a short fight, he boat-flipped the 3-pound bass. “Buzz baits are great, but it’s hard to get a bass to repeat a strike after it misses the first time,” he said.

As the angler worked his way down the shoreline and continued to catch bass on the buzz bait and the Comida Si as a follow-up lure.

He put five more bass in the boat using the follow-up method. Pittman finished the day with over 10 bass and said this is a technique he uses often. “I used that buzz bait most all morning. When a fish would hit and miss the buzz bait, I picked up the rod with the Comida and that did the trick,” he said.
