Victoria Police has taken to social media to showcase one of its latest blitzes, with officers targeting drivers hogging the right-hand lane on multi-lane highways.
The Surf Coast Police has shared five photos on Facebook that show five separate drivers who failed to keep left for one kilometre, which is against Victorian road rules.
Each driver showed on the Facebook page was caught between August 9 and 10, and was issued an infringement notice for $192 and two demerit points.
According to the Facebook posts, the offending driver’s reasons given for hogging the right lane allegedly ranged from “I was listening to the radio” to “didn’t know it was an issue”. One driver in particular allegedly responded simply with “seriously?”.
In almost every Australian state and territory the road rules specify that a driver travelling on a multi-lane road with a posted speed limit of 80km/h or above must keep left unless they are overtaking, turning right, or if all lanes are congested.
The only exception to this is in Queensland where the same rules apply, but at slightly higher posted speed limit of 90km/h.
