The Volvo XC60 is the best-selling vehicle in Sweden in April.
In April, Swedish new car sales endure a disappointing third negative month this year at -6.2% to 20,586 units. This brings the year-to-date tally down -8.5% to 83,890. BEVs ignore the surrounding gloom to climb 27.8% to 6,928 sales and 33.7% share vs. 24.7% a year ago while PHEVs drop -11.6% to 4,549 and 22.1% vs. 23.5% in March 2022. As whole, rechargeable cars hold 55.8% of the market vs. 48.2% last year.
Volvo (-9.2%) holds onto the brands top spot with 14.6% share but trails its home market year-on-year. That’s not the case for Volkswagen (+15.4%) sporting a splendid uptick to reach 12.2% share vs. 10.2% so far this year. Toyota (-17.4%) overtakes a freefalling Kia (-40.6%) to rank #3 year-to-date. Audi (+50.9%) soars to 7.2% share in 5th place, distancing BMW (-13.7%) and Mercedes (+1.5%) showing very different fortunes. Tesla (+8144.4%) continues to erase its backloaded quarters as it has been the case in the whole of Europe now, the American brand ranking #10 this month vs. #5 year-to-date. Ford (+38.4%) and Skoda (+27.5%) also impress.
Model-wise, the Volvo XC60 (+29.1%) easily takes the lead with just under 1,000 sales for the month above its little brother the Volvo XC40 (-26.1%) in great difficulty. The VW ID.4 (+57.4%) remains in third place while the Tesla Model Y (+12940%!) drops just three spots on March to a sensational 4th place (as it is the start of the quarter), keeping the year-to-date lead in the process. The Kia Niro (-44%) is up three ranks on last month to #5 but sinks year-on-year. The Toyota RAV4 (+5.1%), Volvo S/V60 (-53.7%) and Skoda Enyaq (+33.6%) follow. Closing the Top 10 are the Ford Kuga (+135.2%) and Toyota Corolla (-52.7%). Notice also the BMW i4 (+503.8%), Renault Megane (+401.7%) and Audi A6 (+265.4%) all surging year-on-year.
