The Nissan Ariya breaks its Norwegian ranking record in July.
The Norwegian new car market only edges up 3.8% year-on-year in July to 7,525 units, a very weak score taking into account July 2022 was off -31.1% on the year prior. The year-to-date tally is still in negative at -2.2% to 74,072. BEVs once again outpace the market at +20.1% to 6,148 and 81.7% share and are up 3.6% year-to-date to 61,423 and 82.9% of the market. PHEVs sink -31.1% to 613 and 8.1% share and are down -26.9% year-to-date to 5,301 and 7.2% while HEVs skid -32.4% to 443 and 5.9% share but gain 16.9% YTD to 4,567 and 6.2% of the market. As a whole, electrified vehicles hold 95.7% of sales for the month at 7,204 and 96.2% YTD at 71,291. Petrol sales represent 1.4% of the market in July and 1.3% year-to-date and diesel is at 2.8% and 2.4% .
In the brands ranking, Volkswagen (+28.2%) soars to #1 with 20.4% share vs. 13.7% so far this year, distancing Toyota (+23.5%) also in outstanding shape. Skoda (-0.2%) is stable but at 10.7% share it is almost twice as high as its YTD level of 5.5%. Volvo (+75.9%) surges year-on-year but at 5.8% share it is lower than the 6.8% it commands YTD. Nissan (+212.5%) posts the largest year-on-year gain in the Top 10 and leaps to 6th place with BMW (+22.9%) and Audi (+6.5%) also beating the market in the remainder of the Top 10. Reversely MG (-44.9%), Hyundai (-28.7%) and Ford (-10.9%) all struggle. Below, Tesla (+388.9%) is down from #1 in June to #12 but is still way above its year-ago result. Polestar (+181.1%) shines at #14 while Chinese fare Xpeng (+853.8%) breaks its ranking record at #15.
Model-wise, the VW ID.4 (+50.2%) rises to #1 with an excellent 13% share vs. 6.6% YTD ahead of its twin the Skoda Enyaq (+2.7%) at 9.2% share vs. 4% YTD. The Toyota RAV4 is up 83.7% to third place but the performance of the month goes to the Nissan Ariya up 13 ranks on June to a record 4th place with 3.4% share. Its previous best was #9 in April. The Volvo XC40 (+523.7%) compensates for a drab year-ago volume at #5, with the Ford Mustang Mach-E (-5.1%) and VW ID.5 (-7.6%) both in difficulty. The Audi Q4 e-Tron (+60%) and Polestar 2 (+181.1%) are very dynamic below just as the Audi Q8 e-Tron rounds out the Top 10.
