WestJet, Mechanics Avert Strike, to Return to Bargaining Desk

The Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association has rescinded its WestJet strike notice, thereby preventing further network cancellations, WestJet announced Thursday. Each party has agreed to return to the bargaining table.

The strike notice was to start June 20 at 7 p.m. Canadian Mountain Time.

The Canadian Industrial Relations Board, in responding to WestJet’s request for arbitration, said it required additional time and submissions from both parties before making a decision “on whether or not collective bargaining for our first agreement should be resolved by way of arbitration,” according to WestJet.

The carrier is working to resume normal operations “as quickly and efficiently as possible.” Guests still are encouraged to check the status of their flight before departing for the airport.
