WestJet has canceled about 25 flights scheduled for Thursday and Friday in preparation for a potential strike by its maintenance engineers and other technical operations employees, the carrier said Thursday, the second time in two weeks it has done so.
The Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association has served the airline with a strike notice effective Friday at 5:30 p.m. Mountain Standard Time, according to WestJet.
The cancellations “ensure the airline can safely park its aircraft in a controlled manner, while enabling proactive communication and preventing the stranding of WestJet’s guests and crew,” according to the carrier.
WestJet last week canceled about 40 flights scheduled for June 18-19, but the carrier and the union June 20 agreed to return to the bargaining table, at least temporarily.
The carrier encouraged travelers to check the status of their flight before departing for the airport.
