Ever wondered what those green stickers mean on highway-side reflector posts in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria?
The ‘3-2-1 green reflectors’ were originally created for truck drivers to assist with short stop points where drivers can check their cargo or pull over for a small rest if they are tired.
The initiative was started by road safety advocate and truck driver Rod Hannifey.
Each site is located within clear visibility of other motorists and has firm ground for drivers to pull over with ease.
Three green reflectors will appear 500m away from the location, two green reflectors will appear 250m away and then the final green reflector indicates the area in which drivers can safely pull over.
Although the space is shared for all drivers, it’s aimed more at drivers who are travelling with trailers, caravans or heavy cargo that when driving may cause it to travel less than the average speed limit.
This area provides drivers a safe point to pull over and allow other drivers to pass. It can also be used by learner drivers if there is a long queue behind them.
The stops aren’t intended for drivers to spend a long period of time sitting at.
As a courtesy drivers, are also asked to drive to the furthest point of the rest stop to allow for other drivers to access the area as well.
